House Beautiful - London's 'thinnest' house for sale in Shepherd's Bush for £950,000. The five-storey property sure does cram a lot in! Not sure I could deal with that trap door in my bedroom!

House & Garden - How to make your own natural cleaning spray. Taken from the essential guide to cleaning your house with natural products, this recipe from 'Clean Green' by Jen Chillingsworth is a tried-and-tested winner.

goop - 7 Ways to Renew Your WFH Space. What have we learned over almost a year of working from home?

Who What Where - 4 Super-Cute Outfit Pairings That Are Perfect for Spring. I always love a cute embroidered blouse and high waisted jeans.

baby - I bought this bib for my niece for Christmas and just discovered that the brand is also available on Target and they have so much more! The floral pattern is so pretty and this catchall-style is the best for falling food (or liquids!). They also make this silicone place mat in the same pattern and bowls and plates in the softest coordinating colors. How cute is this pacifier clip? Just ordered a set of the bowls for snack time!

denim - Last week I was organizing my closet and finally did a denim edit. I almost never get rid of jeans but it was time! There were so many styles I was holding on to “just in case they ever fit me again one day” but after 2-3+ years of just sitting there, it was time to seriously evaluate. So I regained some valuable closet space and determined two styles that I love. The Agolde Riley is one of my favorites and I found it in this perfect light wash with a bit of distressing. You can wear it now with a chunky knit and boots and later with well, everything!

in my bag - This skin stick has been a lifesaver this winter. I used it on myself and on the kids in Lake Placid. It was below 10 degrees, windy, and snowing and we all had dry chapped lips and rosy cheeks. Now I put it on before we go outside. It’s plant-based, fragrance free, and handmade in California.

make - Chicken Braised With Potatoes and Pine Nuts. This delicious one pot meal is easy to make and very satisfying. You can easily leave out the nuts (we did that in our house because Frank is allergic) and its still delicious!

THE THREE BEAUTY PRODUCTS I'M LOVING RIGHT NOW

Beauty_skincare_.JPG

eyes * // brows * // under eye concealer * (purchase one-time case here) // foundation * // blush * (also use this for lips)

* means this is clean and organic

b e a u t y f a v o r i t e s

The only makeup brush you’ll ever need! I’m not an expert on applying makeup but I can tell you I have the other two smaller sizes and I never use them. THIS size I use all the time - for sunscreen in the summer, to blend concealer, or all over if I use foundation. It is so incredibly soft and really feels luxury (you won’t be disappointed). Here is the silver one in stock.

I use this once a week and it is EXCELLENT! Probably one of the best facials I’ve ever used. It leaves my skin baby smooth and looking great (hence the name!).

A must try natural mascara.

o t h e r f a v o r i t e s

body lotion and hand cream - You’ve almost definitely seen their products before in an instagram ad or shared by an influencer and I have to say, they’re worth the hype. Not only does Necessaire pride themselves on being clean, their products are packed with vitamins and hyaluronic acid and leave your skin silky smooth.

shampoo/conditioner - I randomly tried this line that I found out Whole Foods and I love it! I’ve been using it since the Summer and my hair has never looked better.

blow - This is not inexpensive but in my opinion it is worth the price tag if you’re blow drying your hair 5 days a week like I do. I actually was introduced to it by a client. She gave me hers to try and swore I would never be able to use another blow dryer after using this one and she was right!

brush - Another expensive beauty tool but again, worth it! Mason Pearson brushes last FOREVER. I still have the one my parents bought for me when I was 10 (not exaggerating). So does my sister! They’re lifers lol. There are lots of videos out there on how to take care of them too.

The investment is worth it and you should be able to use them for years! Also, purchase this balaclava which you can wear under your helmet and over your face mask (which is required on lifts)!

It’s no surprise that I love ba&sh and I’m pretty sure that I wear at least one article of clothing from their Fall/Winter line every day, 7 days a week. The quality is incredible and their Parisian-cool girl street style is my favorite. Thats why I’m so excited to announce a 6 month partnership with the brand! It has always been a dream of mine to work with a brand like this and I couldn’t be more excited to continue sharing them with you! SO, what does this mean? Great clothes for me to style in posts and videos and exclusive discounts and extras for YOU!

This week Bash is offering my followers an extra 25% off sale with code THEGIRLGUIDE (now through February 8th). What to buy? This is a great time to invest in outerwear! I love this classic wool trench style which you can wear well into Spring and this faux shearling style which comes out to under $200. Here are some of my other favorites!

Harper’s Bazaar - Haute Couture Street Style Straight from Paris. There may be less people on the streets, but they're still chic.

I have been on the HUNT for ski gear that won’t break the bank and let me tell you, its not easy. What I’ve realized after a week of research is:

1. You need to spend a little more for good quality, warmth, etc.

2. That doesn’t mean you need to spend luxury prices like $1,000+ for pants and a coat.

3. Discount brands like ASOS are cute but not warm enough for East Coast 10 degree temperature skiing.

I’m planning on doing a larger post on this but so far the best price to quality ratio has been Sweaty Betty. I’m not sure when they launched their ski line but I love what they have this year and right now its 30% off. I ordered these bib pants and also this base layer set.

W H A T

chic - Love this cashmere twist knot headband for under $50. This camel colored one is a little thicker and only $29! Perfect après ski chic accessory.

make - I made these 30 minute creamy Thai turmeric chicken and noodles two weeks ago and they were out of this world! I messed up the recipe a bit and they still turned out great. Flavor is A+ and the kids loved them too which is always a win!

home - How sweet is this wood and rattan bench from Zara Home? I’ve always been impressed with their furniture and home products and pleasantly surprised by the quality as well. This one also comes in brown and would be great at the foot of a bed or under a large window!

denim - One of my favorite denim styles is back in stock! I suggest sizing up one size. They are a but of a splurge but a great all year around style:) If you’re looking for an under 100 pair these are my favorites.

cardi - Speaking of under $100…my cardigan from & Other Stories is also back in stock! I bought this one two years ago and then it sold out over the summer and finally restocked! I suggest getting your typical size.

BUILDING YOUR DREAM CLOSET

CELINE.JPG

“Don’t rush things. Anything worth having is worth waiting for.”

In college I loved walking the streets of Georgetown on the weekends and perusing the small cafes and shops. While my friends would go into some of the bigger name stores like Urban Outfitters, I fell in love with two little boutiques up on Wisconsin Avenue (If you’re from D.C. they were Urban Chic and Sassanova). They carried smaller brands like Rebecca Taylor and Tibi (both just starting out at the time) and other lines that would require lots of saving on my part. In between school and and an internship, I waited tables and babysat to save money for these special pieces. And so began my love of “collecting”. I still have some of them to this day!

I’ve never been an impulsive shopper especially when it comes to spending a little bit more. My love affair with the Celine Medium Classic bag or “Box bag” began over four years ago when my good friend was working for the brand. Here it is in a 2019 holiday gift guide. The bag retails for around $4,000 so I knew I was going to have to find it second-hand. Fashionphile is my go-to luxury handbag reseller and I’ve used them for years for both buying and selling. I probably checked their site once a week for the last year so when this bag popped up for under $1,500 a few weeks ago, I knew I had to act fast! The one I bought is definitely used but knowing how long I’ve waited for the ivory color I couldn’t let it go. If you’re ok with a little scratch or scuff I highly recommend going this route. You will save money that you can spend elsewhere and many times you can find a bag thats almost new!

fewer, better

I didn’t coin this phrase (I’ve seen a lot of brands use it) but I love it. Not only is it better for the environment, it’s better for you! Having a curated closet makes it easier to get dressed in the morning (and more fun!).

Building a closet is like decorating your house - collect pieces you love and your style will always be unique and original to you.

Invest in the classics, not in the basics - You don’t need to break the bank to look great. Spend on classic pieces like a black handbag or a beautiful cream cashmere sweater and save when it comes to tees or denim. You can find a great t-shirt for under $30 and a great pair of jeans for under $100.

Know your worth - Some brands hold their value and continue to increase overtime. Even secondhand purchases from brands like Chanel and Hermes can be worth more 5 years later. Taking care of them can mean selling them back for what you paid or for a profit.

Don’t be impulsive. Wait a month or two for big purchases and if you’re still loving it after more time, go for it!

making a BIG purchase

When I was 25 I bought myself the Chanel wallet on chain (WOC) in black. It was a huge purchase for me and I remember thinking about it for months before finally deciding to splurge. I was starting a new job and wanted to remember the moment and celebrate it. At the time it was $1,100. Fast forward 10 years and the exact same bag has now doubled in price and retails for $2,300. I still love wearing it, always keep it in the box when I’m not using it, and it looks as good as new. The best part? If I ever wanted or needed to sell it I would make money. A great investment! If you’re looking to purchase a “forever” bag I always recommend looking at Chanel first and strongly considering buying it second-hand.

I remember sifting through his record collection and even though its not as fast as yelling to Alexa to play a song, the ceremony of playing a record can’t be beat. Hoping this one has the same effect on our kids:)

make - The goop annual detox is here! I always love the detox recipes and they’re a great place to start if you’re wanting to kick the holiday sweets and get back to something for healthy. I don’t use it as a “diet” more like a refresh and pick a chose what looks good. The recipes shared in previous years have become some of my tried and true favorites like this slow-roasted salmon.

littles - Love this sweet enamel children's bowl and matching mug from this adorable shop Salter House in Brooklyn Heights, NY. They also sell my favorite bamboo cutlery for kids.

ski - I’ve been on the hunt for cool ski clothing and everything I’m finding is either outrageously expensive, boring, or just non-existent. I want a Swiss ski chalet vibe but without the price tag! And then I found this! Sweaty Betty has a ski line! Think Stella McCartney for Adidas. Its not inexpensive but in my experience SB is super high-quality and comfortable.

WINTER STYLE WITH WALMART

Walmart_Fashion_Scoop_Stephanie_Trotta.JPG

S H O P T H E P O S T

This season I have been living in sweaters and sweats. Keeping it casual doesn’t have to mean dressing down. If you want to elevate your cozy at home look, opt for a monochromatic combination or pair a neutral sweater with a more fitted black style like these from Scoop. Walmart Fashion has everything you need this Winter to upgrade your cold weather wardrobe including this faux sherpa coat and this beanie and fingerless gloves set. I have last year’s version of the coat and I still reach for it all the time. These under $30 brown colored joggers are also a great find!

Looking to dress things up this holiday? This black slip skirt is a classic and can be worn all year round. Pair it with sneakers, a white tee, and a cardigan or moto jacket in the Spring! I can’t say enough good things about Walmart’s budget friendly style.

stocking - Looking for a last minute gift or stocking stuffer? By now I’m sure you’ve heard of or seen Necessaire on social media and it really is worth the hype. Their products are clean, committed to sustainability, and to whats good for you and for the environment. At first I thought they were too good to be true…the packaging is beautiful and the products smell great. They’re the real deal! Frank loves the Sandalwood and I love the Bergamot! I use the unscented body lotion every day.

make - I used a hot chocolate bomb for the first time this week and it was so fun. The boys loved it because who doesn’t like a warm cup of hot cocoa in the snow and I loved it because it was like a little ball of magic! You place the ball in a cup and pour hot milk over it (we used almond). What we didn’t realize is that it would also be filled with mini marshmallows! I found this recipe for them online and you can purchase the molds here! Worth it! They would also make a great gift to wrap up for neighbors and friends!

snow - My friend Liz introduced me to this incredible Children’s outdoor, cold weather brand, Reima. The website says “kids’ clothing for active children” and thats exactly what it is! The Danish brand has been around since 1944 so they know a thing or two about dressing for the colder temps. These are the suits I got the boys. A few tips: 1. Order TTS, they will seem big but they’re meant to be that way. The extra space allows the children to move better in snow, etc. 2. They are always sold out but keep checking because they’re constantly restocking. I’m currently waiting for the gloves to come back! PS You can use my friends code Mrsnipple20.

ride - My dream bicycle. Just sayin’……

DECORATING FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH THE FINISH

_BAP3767.jpg

t h e f i n i s h

I knew I wanted the holidays to feel a little extra special at the Trotta house this year but I didn’t know where to begin. A few years ago I saw an image on Pinterest and fell in love…it was a simple staircase covered in lush garland with three perfectly tied ivory velvet bows. I loved the simplicity of it all and how it still felt festive! We have spent so much time at home this year that “decking the halls” felt like a must! So when The Finish reached out I knew exactly what I wanted to do!

The Finish took my vision and executed it beautifully. I really wanted the look to be minimal and elegant and also feel like me. They sourced the perfect shade of blush for our ribbons and added sprigs of fresh juniper to the garland. We used pieces I already had like the stockings, stocking holders, and candles, and added elements like the mirror and Josh Young print. I love how everything turned out and I couldn’t be happier! Every morning I walk into our living room with a smile on my face because it looks (and smells) great:)

Want to use The Finish but don’t live in Fairfield County? No problem! for $50 you can book a virtual consultation and The Finish will help you execute your dream project from afar!

Stephanie’s {from the finish} Tips

spray live garland once every 1-2 days to keep it fresh and prevent it from drying out

when hanging garland over mantle: lay it in place and then cut it in the center. Reattach on of the bottom ends to the top center so each piece cascades downward. If you don’t do this one side will fan out and you won’t have a symmetrical look!

Fake it! You don’t have to use all real. Pop a little faux eucalyptus or juniper berries into your garland to make it look more full and lush

We love our weezie towels! We’ve had them for over two years now and they’re still soft, not pulled, and super absorbent. The boys have the gray trim and I monogrammed their hand towels to say “Trotta Boys”. Get creative and they’ll make a great gift!

Vogue - 5 Things We Learned Watching Taylor Swift’s Surprise New Folklore Documentary. Started watching this on Thanksgiving eve and if you’re a Folklore fan it’s a MUST WATCH.

goop - 3 Steps to Follow When You’re Obsessing about the Future or Ruminating on the Past. Whether we’re worrying about the future or feeling stuck on the past, our minds have a way of haunting us. Couple that with the beeping machines we carry around in our pockets, and there’s a lot pulling us away from the current moment.

Harper’s Bazaar - Don't Call Sophia Roe's New VICE Series, Counter Space, a Cooking Show. Roe's latest project will explore how food inherently shapes our society and worldview.

pan - I’ve been hearing about this pan for a few months now and finally caved! We have very limited space in our kitchen cabinets so having a 7-in-1 pan is going to be a godsend! Love the steam color (obv lol). Such a great gift!

rug - My most requested and shopped item in the history of The Girl Guide is our living room rug. It has been sold out in the larger sizes for months but was just restocked! Our color is the “light grey”. The rug is wool and sisal making it durable, easy to clean, and soft!

work - Since we’ll be working from home for the foreseeable future, Frank and I finally started to put together “offices” for ourselves. I put it in quotes because they’re more of a nook than a room but already a huge improvement over what we had. The most important thing for him was a comfortable chair. We ordered this one and this one. Stay tuned…

wreath - I bought a couple of these preserved boxwood wreaths when we first moved into our house and they have lasted over 4 years! When the season is over I store them in the garage and even after being hung outside for a month (sun, rain, snow) they still look like new!
