The Atlantic - The Pandemic Has Erased Entire Categories of Friendship. There’s a reason you miss the people you didn’t even know that well.

Time - The 5 Best New Shows Our TV Critic Watched in January 2021. Lupin is a much watch. So good and refreshingly different.

Harper’s Bazaar - Haute Couture Street Style Straight from Paris. There may be less people on the streets, but they're still chic.

I have been on the HUNT for ski gear that won’t break the bank and let me tell you, its not easy. What I’ve realized after a week of research is:

1. You need to spend a little more for good quality, warmth, etc.

2. That doesn’t mean you need to spend luxury prices like $1,000+ for pants and a coat.

3. Discount brands like ASOS are cute but not warm enough for East Coast 10 degree temperature skiing.

I’m planning on doing a larger post on this but so far the best price to quality ratio has been Sweaty Betty. I’m not sure when they launched their ski line but I love what they have this year and right now its 30% off. I ordered these bib pants and also this base layer set.

chic - Love this cashmere twist knot headband for under $50. This camel colored one is a little thicker and only $29! Perfect après ski chic accessory.

make - I made these 30 minute creamy Thai turmeric chicken and noodles two weeks ago and they were out of this world! I messed up the recipe a bit and they still turned out great. Flavor is A+ and the kids loved them too which is always a win!

home - How sweet is this wood and rattan bench from Zara Home? I’ve always been impressed with their furniture and home products and pleasantly surprised by the quality as well. This one also comes in brown and would be great at the foot of a bed or under a large window!

denim - One of my favorite denim styles is back in stock! I suggest sizing up one size. They are a but of a splurge but a great all year around style:) If you’re looking for an under 100 pair these are my favorites.

cardi - Speaking of under $100…my cardigan from & Other Stories is also back in stock! I bought this one two years ago and then it sold out over the summer and finally restocked! I suggest getting your typical size.

Harper’s Bazaar - The Case for Regé-Jean Page to Play James Bond. After the success of Bridgerton, there are some exciting 007 rumors afoot. Yes please!

Vanity Fair - How Harry and Meghan’s Royal Exit Led to an Unexpected Happy Ending. A year after their bombshell announcement, the Sussexes are putting down roots in Los Angeles, while the remaining royals are hard at work and as popular as ever.

listen - I bought this turntable for Frank for Christmas. Growing up my Dad would play music almost every weeknight and on the weekends. I remember sifting through his record collection and even though its not as fast as yelling to Alexa to play a song, the ceremony of playing a record can’t be beat. Hoping this one has the same effect on our kids:)

make - The goop annual detox is here! I always love the detox recipes and they’re a great place to start if you’re wanting to kick the holiday sweets and get back to something for healthy. I don’t use it as a “diet” more like a refresh and pick a chose what looks good. The recipes shared in previous years have become some of my tried and true favorites like this slow-roasted salmon.

littles - Love this sweet enamel children's bowl and matching mug from this adorable shop Salter House in Brooklyn Heights, NY. They also sell my favorite bamboo cutlery for kids.

ski - I’ve been on the hunt for cool ski clothing and everything I’m finding is either outrageously expensive, boring, or just non-existent. I want a Swiss ski chalet vibe but without the price tag! And then I found this! Sweaty Betty has a ski line! Think Stella McCartney for Adidas. Its not inexpensive but in my experience SB is super high-quality and comfortable.

House and Garden UK - Simple ways to make Christmas more sustainable. Although we all give way to a little rampant consumerism over the Christmas period, there are ways to make the season more sustainable and eco-friendly. Here are some tips to cut down on the waste.

stocking - Looking for a last minute gift or stocking stuffer? By now I’m sure you’ve heard of or seen Necessaire on social media and it really is worth the hype. Their products are clean, committed to sustainability, and to whats good for you and for the environment. At first I thought they were too good to be true…the packaging is beautiful and the products smell great. They’re the real deal! Frank loves the Sandalwood and I love the Bergamot! I use the unscented body lotion every day.

make - I used a hot chocolate bomb for the first time this week and it was so fun. The boys loved it because who doesn’t like a warm cup of hot cocoa in the snow and I loved it because it was like a little ball of magic! You place the ball in a cup and pour hot milk over it (we used almond). What we didn’t realize is that it would also be filled with mini marshmallows! I found this recipe for them online and you can purchase the molds here! Worth it! They would also make a great gift to wrap up for neighbors and friends!

snow - My friend Liz introduced me to this incredible Children’s outdoor, cold weather brand, Reima. The website says “kids’ clothing for active children” and thats exactly what it is! The Danish brand has been around since 1944 so they know a thing or two about dressing for the colder temps. These are the suits I got the boys. A few tips: 1. Order TTS, they will seem big but they’re meant to be that way. The extra space allows the children to move better in snow, etc. 2. They are always sold out but keep checking because they’re constantly restocking. I’m currently waiting for the gloves to come back! PS You can use my friends code Mrsnipple20.

ride - My dream bicycle. Just sayin’……

listen - Shocked and so excited when I saw that Taylor Swift was releasing a follow-up or I guess continuation to her folklore album. The Disney special was so great and gave me a new outlook on Folklore. I felt like I was listening to so many of the songs for the first time. I’ve haven’t listened to an album this much since I was in high school. I kind of love how we don’t know ANYTHING until the release is only 8 hours away. T Swift must know how much we love instant gratification these days. What a gift! Can’t wait to listen this weekend!

make - Cheers! I’ve always gravitated towards cocktails made with darker liquors like bourbon or whiskey, especially this time of year. This spiced honey bourbon old fashioned sounds so good! A few more ingredients than you’re probably accustomed too for a cocktail but the spiced honey syrup sounds worth it! I’m going to try it this weekend and report back!

It was my Grandmother’s and is over 40 years old which accounts for the inconsistencies. May have to add it Frank’s Christmas list! Love this easy coconut butter coffee recipe!

shop - One of my favorite local shops just became available online which means now you can shop them too! The Huntress is a treasure trove of I just bought this French mural tray to hang in our powder room. It is in desperate need of a refresh and since we don’t have the budget to do a total reno right now, the combination of the tray and a coat of paint will do just the trick! I also picked up these hand-engraved crystal wine glasses with stars.

pan - I’ve been hearing about this pan for a few months now and finally caved! We have very limited space in our kitchen cabinets so having a 7-in-1 pan is going to be a godsend! Love the steam color (obv lol). Such a great gift!

rug - My most requested and shopped item in the history of The Girl Guide is our living room rug. It has been sold out in the larger sizes for months but was just restocked! Our color is the “light grey”. The rug is wool and sisal making it durable, easy to clean, and soft!

work - Since we’ll be working from home for the foreseeable future, Frank and I finally started to put together “offices” for ourselves. I put it in quotes because they’re more of a nook than a room but already a huge improvement over what we had. The most important thing for him was a comfortable chair. We ordered this one and this one. Stay tuned…

brush - For about a year now my pre shower routine has included dry brushing. I don’t do it every single time (especially when I’m in a rush) but usually once a week for about five minutes I dry brush using this brush. I actually received it as a gift from my dermatologist who swears by it for circulation and exfoliation. For more on dry brushing and a great video tutorial from Goop, click here.

slip - A slip skirt is a closet staple for me. They can easily be worn with a chunky knit in the colder temps and paired back to your favorite white t-shirt in the Spring or Summer. This pretty pale blush style is great and under $100. It would make the perfect “at home for the holidays” outfit - just add slippers!

New Preston, CT

Feeling the need to get out of the house and hit the road this weekend? If you’re in the area I highly recommend New Preston, CT. We drove up for the day last weekend and it was just what the doctor ordered…mountain air, good food, and a little retail therapy!

Stop at The Smithy Market and 9 Main for lunch - the sandwiches are so good here Frank ordered two (for himself!). They have plenty of picnic tables outside or take your lunch to-go on a hike. We ran out of time but Lake Waramaug has beautiful hiking trails.

After lunch walk up into town and be sure to pop into all of the lovely antique shops and small businesses. My favorite was Plain Goods. They have the most beautiful home goods, as well as women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing. Perfect place to start your holiday shopping! I also love Privet House.

After a long day head to The Owl for dinner. We haven’t been yet but I’ve heard rave reviews! Happy travels!

They’ve actually been around for a while (I first discovered her in my teens in Europe when my super cool older cousin was carrying one of her bags) but its only been within the last 5 years that her collections have been available in the States. gift - I just finished my holiday gift guide for men (it will be on the blog next week) and this year I really tried to find gifts that encourage slowing down and relaxation. We’ve been talking about getting a record player for a while now so we can listen to my Dad’s old vinyls and I love this one. It happens to fit perfectly on one of the shelves in our family room. knit - Looking to give the gift of relaxation this season? No, I don’t mean a massage! Knitting! Seriously though, I’m almost finished with my first project from Smoke & Slate and it has been so nice picking up my needles again (and when I saw “my needles” I mean the ones I haven’t seen since my Mom taught me in high school). The kit has everything you need including links to online tutorials that make learning a cinch! Best part of knitting? Two fully occupied hands unavailable for scrolling :)

I was in the middle of episode four when I couldn’t help but think to myself how lucky we are that this was filmed in time for us to watch it during the pandemic. We don’t know when new films and series will get to resume filming and this one is just a gem. Watch the preview here.

wear - I have a love/hate relationship with sharing pieces from H&M. I love them because the quality and design are usually spot on and its affordable, BUT they always sell out incredibly fast and that can be so frustrating. This sweater is currently available in every size and is perfect for the upcoming holidays. You can easily style it with a casual pair of light wash denim or with a floral skirt or over a dress for an occasion.

setting the table for the holidays

We all know that the holidays are going to look and feel a little different this year. You may be used to celebrating with 20 people and now you’ll be staying at home with two. No matter how you’ll be celebrating one thing remains true, the holidays aren’t cancelled! You can still create beautiful new memories this year. One way I’m making this season feel a little extra special is by investing in new tabletop pieces. I was recently introduced to The Avenue and am obsessed with their super chic assortment of apparel and accessories, but they also have the most beautifully curated place settings.

How do you shacket?

A shacket is basically exactly what it sounds like: a shirt and a jacket combined. You can now find two styles, one that is based on a “lumberjack shirt” with two front pockets, or one like this, also with pockets, but a little more feminine.

w h a t

sherpa - I’ve been slightly obsessed with faux sherpa this year! Love these under $30 slippers AND remember the Sherpa Mom Bag I posted about back in June? I found a stockist in the US and better yet it’s a small female-owned business based in my town! I couldn’t believe it when I walked into Wee Mondine this week and there she was (the bag lol). Love the oversized look and feel and the under $70 price tag! You can also get a little round coin purse or a larger pouch.

make - It’s that time of year again! The leaves are falling, the temperatures are dropping, and cozy meals are exactly what I’m craving. One of my all time favorite recipes is Ina Garten’s Beef Bourguignon. It takes a little bit of time and you’ll need to stock up on the ingredients, but its WORTH IT!

denim - I have been living in these jeans from Agolde. I bought them right before our trip to Nantucket and other than my Levi’s wedgie, these are the ones I reach for everyday. I like the raw hem with my sneakers during the week and I love the lighter wash paired with a chunky knit.

No more removing your makeup at night and throwing away the cotton ball, pad, or in my case, wasting a pieces of toilet paper! Instead, now you can use these and just throw them in the wash after a couple of uses. I also found these bamboo ones on Etsy. Such a great little holiday gift for your girlfriends with your favorite face wash!

Their newest feature allows you to see which companies and brands are Black-owned.

Bloomberg - The First Female Recession Threatens to Wipe Out Decades of Progress for U.S. Women. “The pandemic has erased years of economic gains for women and is poised to leave lasting economic scars.”

National Geographic - A tiny pest helped stoke this year’s devastating wildfires. It’s not just hot, dry conditions and fire suppression that has exacerbated 2020's western fires. There’s also the attack of the beetles to consider.

Architectural Digest - Inside Rainn Wilson’s Idyllic Spanish-Style Hacienda. The actor and his writer spouse, Holiday Reinhorn, have crafted their own magical Green Acres story along the coast near L.A.

Have you heard of the brand Sister Jane? Love their feminine silhouettes and fun frocks…

refresh - Love these rattan drawer pulls for an update to a dresser or cabinet. Also, this under $200 lamp from Urban Outfitters is so sweet. We have a small rattan side table from them and the quality is great.

brush - It feels sort of silly raving about a brush but here I am! I still have my Mason Pearson hair brush from when I was a little girl. They are absolutely an investment but something you’ll never have to think about again and they only get better with age. It’s strange to think about but the boys now use the brush that my sister and I used everyday! The pink or blue children’s ones would make a great baby gift!

make - Friday nights are pizza night in the Trotta House but this week we’re trying something new! This recipe for roasted butternut squash prosciutto pizza with caramelized onions looks delicious! May add a little bit of arugula to the top for a little spice!

home - Designer Amber Louis just launched her collection with Anthropologie. To be honest I was a little put off with how pricey everything is but here are a few items I’ve had my eye on: this tablecloth, and this matching napkin set. I also love this black lamp.

Have you shopped The Avenue yet? This online boutique is a treasure trove of beautiful things for yourself and for your home. Here are a few things I’ve had my eye on. This wicker thermos reminds me of one my Aunt in Belgium has!

W H A T

make - Grown-Up Cereal Bars with Almond Butter, Espresso, and Cardamom. Anyone else getting the itch to bake? These bars look like the perfect inaugural recipe to kick off the season! Now how hard will it be to find puffed brown rice?

spray - I just ordered this dry shampoo that my bestie has been raving about. I love Klorane and I’m hoping it will be exactly what I need for those get up and go mornings when I’m rushing to get the boys off to school.

scrub - I was gifted this cleanser during quarantine and I have used it to the last drop! I cleanse with it daily and use it as a clarifying mask 1-2 times a week. The company is a small, local-to-me, and female founded business that uses only natural ingredients. She is restocking in mid-October!

drink - You are all going to think I’m nutso for saying this but I found the BEST travel water bottle ever. I’ll be honest, I originally bought it for looks (so pretty). I was sick of rummaging through our cup cabinet in the morning looking for anything with a matching lid and this just looked like a fresh start. Beyond being aesthetically beautiful, the top is designed in a way that liquid only pours out of the sides (not from the center) so there is no feeling of your hot tea or coffee rushing out at you too fast. The same goes for ice which was the best party trick when my cubes were still cubes a day late. If said too much already haha - just get it! You will 1000% love it and thank me later. I’m thinking of buying these for the boys.

laced-up - I’m going to do a bigger post on Fall boots but wanted to share my favorite style this year (and last year). It’s best described as a sleek combat boot, laces up, and looks great paired with denim, dresses, and skirts. I have this pair from ba&sh and wore them all the time last Fall and Winter. Here is a similar style for under $200 and I also love this pair. Stay tuned for a full boot styling video!

Family room inspiration! We are in the process of updating our family room and I’ve been scouring Pinterest for ideas. We have two huge built-in bookcases that flank a window seat and I want them to be both beautiful and functional. Easier said than done!

make - Early Fall cooking when you’re not really using the grill anymore but also don’t want to turn on the oven! This Parmesan chicken by Ina Garten is one of my go-to’s during this transitional season. Sub a vegan parmesan if you’re looking for dairy-free.

trend - Snoods and collars are everywhere this year! Transform your blazer or basic cardigan with this melange-knit style. Love the gold zipper detail.

cover - Check out this country perfect checked tablecloth for under $50. I always get asked about the tablecloth in our dining room. I bought it years ago from Home Goods and have been looking for another one to add to the rotation! Complete the set with these matching napkins.

watch - I’ve become addicted to Hilary Swank’s new show on Netflix, Away. If you haven’t watched it yet please do so TONIGHT! Spoiler alert: If you’ve finished season one click here for Marie Claire’s inside scoop on a second season.

read - Finally a book about one of my favorite subjects…RATTAN! No but seriously, I’m so excited about this coffee table book. Just pre-ordered it for next month! Speaking of rattan, how perfect is this simple rattan mirror? Love it for powder room layered over an intricate wallpaper!

pj’s - Duck, Duck, Woody! Obsessed with these pj’s for the boys (and girls) featuring everyone’s favorite classic wagon. How perfect are they for Fall? They also come in adult sizes.

make - Major crowd pleaser recipe for you today: zucchini parmesan chicken meatballs with lemon pasta carbonara. YUM! I would double the meatball recipe and freeze half for a later date. Dairy free? Sub the parmesan for a DF alternative like this one from Follow Your Heart (it’s the best).

National Geographic - China forges ahead with ambitious national park plan. The new system aims to benefit wildlife and people alike, but balancing conservation with the development of a tourism industry can be tricky.

Vogue - What’s New on Netflix in September. Now that I’m almost done binge-watching Yellowstone I’m going to need something really good to fill the void next month! Any recs?

Veranda - These Are the 15 Most Beautiful National Park Lodges in the U.S. Fun fact: Frank and I were almost married at the Greyfield Inn on Cumberland Island. Ultimately we decided it was too far for my family already traveling from Belgium to NY, but I still think about how lovely that would have been.

New York Magazine - Say Good-bye to Blue Hill at Stone Barns. This one really hit close to home - no more Blue Hill, no more Chef Barber. What do you think about the new plan?

make - Crispy bean cakes with harissa, lemon, and herbs. I made these and served them over a bed of micro greens - so good! More and more I find myself looking for meatless recipes to supplement chicken or a burger. These bean cakes are delicious and filling. For sides, I made hummus, a fresh cucumber salad, and put out my favorite kalamata olives.

tea - Our number one most used kitchen appliance is this compact tea maker. I use it to make loose leaf tea, to boil water for regular tea, and Frank uses it ever morning to boil water for his French press. We’ve had it for over a year now and I’m shocked at how much we use it. I love that you can select the temperature of your water which is important when making tea, but has also come in handy for recipes. Highly recommend!

mr. sun - This Surya rattan sun arrived last week and its even better in person! Originally I was going to put it in the boy’s room but I’m actually thinking I’ll use it in their bathroom or the playroom (basement). Right now he’s been hanging out on the living room mantle and they greet him every morning!

makeup - This is the best under eye concealer I’ve ever tried. Period. It doesn’t cake, it doesn’t show creases, and it stays on.

movie night - Frank surprised me with an outdoor movie last Saturday night! In case you missed it, here is the post on Instagram. It was one of my favorite nights of the Summer. This is the portable projector we used and he attached it to this tripod. We don’t have a professional “sheet” yet so he just used one of our old fitted sheets (LOL) and it was perfect! Highly recommend outdoor movie nights! Don’t forget the bug spray:)

love more - Small business love that gives back! My friend Ailsa recently teamed up with House of Shan to create The Happy Tee! The imperfect rainbow heart symbolizes happiness, unity, equality, and love for all… and a little reminder to find ‘your happy’ each and every day. $5 from every purchase supports Chicago Birthworks Collective and they’re also available for kids:)

dress - Loveshackfancy vibes on a budget! Love this ruffle mini dress and its $100 price tag! Transition it from Summer to Fall styled with a pair of booties and a cropped leather jacket for an Isabel Marant look.

floral treat - The prettiest cookie you’ll ever eat! My best friend served these at her wedding and I was hooked! They’re beautiful and delicious. They make the perfect surprise treat for a friend or family member, or a little pick-me-up for yourself! I may need to order the Gluten Free matcha ones for my birthday next month…

clean-up - I always get asked on Instagram how I keep our house so neat with two little boys. Its a combination of things! The living and dining room areas are the “clean zone” in our house while the family room and basement are for the kids to be kids. Our house is only 1,800 sq ft so this is a compromise that works well for us. One secret I have are these belly baskets. They look great and they make it easy for me to clean up the toys they leave around the living room.

make - I’m always on the hunt for lunch recipes. I try to eat lunch at home 4-5 days a week and with Frank home every day, it needs to be satisfying enough to get us both through our day! Chicken salad is one of my favorites because it’s easy to throw together and delicious! I’ll usually eat it over greens and then make a sandwich for Frank and the boys. THIS kitchen sink chicken salad recipe from Daphne Oz is so good.

jewels - Love simple and classic jewelry that will stand the test of time. These rose gold diamond huggies are beautiful and timeless. I had a follower reach out about a 40th birthday gift and these hoops would be perfect! Mateo is a black-owned business.
